New Delhi, Nov 25 (IANS) The Delhi government on Tuesday declared a public holiday to observe the 350th martyrdom anniversary of the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, whose unmatched sacrifice to safeguard the faith and human dignity is remembered with deep reverence across the country.
The Delhi government, which had earlier listed November 25 as a restricted holiday, converted it into a full public holiday to allow citizens to participate in commemorative events and pay tribute to the legacy of Guru Tegh Bahadur.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the decision ahead of the three-day ‘Gurmat Samagam’ that began near the Red Fort on Sunday.
In a message shared on Twitter, the Chief Minister said, “May Guru Sahib’s timeless message of courage, compassion and freedom of faith continue to guide and inspire us in our collective journey.” She is personally monitoring the preparations for the grand commemoration and recently also inspected the venue at the Red Fort.
During his review, CM Gupta assessed the arrangements related to security, traffic regulation, lighting, crowd management, cleanliness, drinking water and emergency services. He directed the officials to ensure that all preparations are as per the highest standards and there is no inconvenience to the devotees during the event. Many dignitaries including Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa and Kapil Mishra were also present during the inspection.
The Red Fort, a historical symbol associated with the supreme sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur, is hosting the three-day event from November 23 to 25. The program includes a grand museum displaying rare historical accounts related to the Guru, a special light and sound show on the ramparts and satsang-kirtan sessions by seven accompaniment groups. The Chief Minister urged people from Delhi and beyond to participate in this once-in-a-century commemoration.
In Uttar Pradesh, the state government has also declared a public holiday today to commemorate the 350th martyrdom day of Guru Tegh Bahadur. All government offices, schools and educational institutions across the state will remain closed as a mark of respect to the Guru’s legacy.
Both the states are observing the day with devotion and respect, highlighting the enduring message of Guru Teg Bahadur’s courage, freedom of conscience and protection of righteousness.
