Figures from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) show that more than 300 people submitted tax returns in the last hour of 2025.
Some 342 people submitted self-assessment tax returns in the last hour of the year.
With less than a month to go before the January 31 deadline, 54,053 people have already welcomed the new year by filing their 2024-25 tax returns. eve and New Year’s Day.
About 3,927 people filed tax returns between 11 a.m. and 11:59 a.m. on Dec. 31, the most popular time of the two days.
More than 6.36 million taxpayers have submitted their tax returns and nearly 5.65 million taxpayers need to complete self-assessment forms before the deadline.
Those who miss the deadline may face an initial overdue fine of £100, with further penalties likely to follow. A fixed penalty of £100 applies even if tax is not paid or tax due is paid on time.
Myrtle Lloyd, chief customer officer at HMRC, said: “What better way to ensure your tax affairs are in order for the year ahead than to fill in your tax return?”

HMRC Says people can start a tax return, save it and revisit it as many times as needed before filing. The tax agency said the bill does not have to be paid immediately once it is mailed, but it does need to be paid by the January 31 deadline.

Those who are unable to meet the deadline are urged to tell HMRC before 31 January. HMRC says it will treat fairly those who have reasonable grounds for doing so.

Criminals may take advantage of the deadline by sending false information purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The tax agency said people should never share their HMRC login details with anyone.
