This bridge in Baltimore was built in 1977 and is officially known as the Francis Scott Key Bridge, named after the author of the American national anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

The base bridge, which opened in 1977, is named after the author of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” The Baltimore Sun reports.

It was near the site where the bridge was later built that Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombing of Fort McHenry in 1814, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) website.

It was that moment that inspired him to later write “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

On September 13, 1814, the British began a massive 25-hour bombardment of Fort McHenry, which protected the port of Baltimore. The British army planned to launch a land attack after the bombing. However, the bombing failed and the British had to abandon their land attack plans.

The Battle of Baltimore was part of the War of 1812, which was fought between June 18, 1812, and February 17, 1815, between the United States and Great Britain.

The war broke out over British infringement of U.S. maritime rights and ended with the signing of the Treaty of Ghent.

According to Encyclopedia Britannica Online, the Battle of Baltimore inspired “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
