Hiranandani Group promoters summoned in foreign exchange violation case

The Enforcement Directorate has summoned Mumbai-based major real estate developer Hiranandani Group’s promoters Niranjan Hiranandani and his son Darshan Hiranandani on February 26 for questioning in a foreign exchange violation case, official sources said on Sunday.

Hiranandani has been asked to appear at the central agency’s office in Mumbai, but he can choose to submit his preliminary response through an authorized representative, he said.

Darshan Hiranandani has been living in Dubai for the last several years.

Around four premises of Hiranandani Group in and around Mumbai were searched by the ED last week under the provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).

Apart from some foreign transactions, the agency is said to be probing beneficiaries of a British Virgin Islands (BVI)-based trust allegedly linked to the promoters of Hiranandani Group.

The group has said that it will cooperate with ED in this FEMA investigation.

Official sources said the ED probe is not linked to another FEMA probe being conducted against TMC leader Mahua Moitra, who was expelled as Lok Sabha MP in December last year.

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey had accused Ms Moitra of asking questions in the Lok Sabha to target the Adani Group and Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the behest of Darshan Hiranandani in return for gifts.

Mr Dubey had also accused Ms Moitra of compromising national security for monetary gains.

Ms Moitra has denied any wrongdoing and claimed she was being targeted because she had raised questions about Adani Group deals.
