Chennai, Oct 12 (IANS) Tamil Nadu is set for another day of widespread rain, with the Regional Meteorological Center (RMC) in Chennai predicting heavy rain in many parts of the state on Sunday.
According to the latest bulletin, ten districts are likely to receive intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
The weather office said heavy rains are expected in hilly and interior areas of Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi and Madurai, while Dindigul, Tiruchirappalli, Salem and Namakkal districts may also receive heavy rain throughout the day.
“Winds up to 40 km per hour are expected during the storm and heavy rainfall may occur in some areas,” the statement said.
Chennai and its adjoining suburbs are expected to continue receiving intermittent moderate rain, with cloudy skies for most of the day.
“Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in some areas of the city and its surrounding areas,” an RMC official said.
The department has also warned residents of sensitive and low-lying areas to remain alert as the intensity of rain can fluctuate rapidly in a short period. Drivers have been advised to exercise caution while driving through water-logged areas.
The forecast follows rainfall on Saturday, when several districts including Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Madurai, Sivagangai, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruvannamalai and Tirupattur received heavy rain with thunder and lightning.
Many of these areas are now on high alert due to saturated soils and rising water levels in local rivers and reservoirs.
With the northeast monsoon expected to intensify in the next few days, meteorologists have urged local administrations to strengthen storm water drainage systems and keep flood-response teams ready.
The public has also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel to hilly areas where landslides may occur. The RMC forecast underlines the unpredictable nature of this year’s monsoon pattern, driven by persistent low pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal, which continues to impact the weather system over Tamil Nadu.
