Landslide in Jammu: Major landslides occurred in Kishtwari Pather and Banihal.

New Delhi:

The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained blocked following fresh landslides in Ramban district on Wednesday, officials said.

Hundreds of vehicles were stranded due to massive landslides and rockfall at several places on the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar highway, which is the only road link connecting Kashmir with the rest of the country.

The highway was closed on Monday and efforts to restore the road to traffic could not succeed due to landslides at several places in the last three days.

Officials say traffic was partially restored on Wednesday afternoon to clear stranded vehicles in the Banihal-Ramban sector, but the highway was again blocked due to a massive landslide in Kishtwari.

Heavy snowfall has also led to the closure of several other major roads, including the Srinagar-Ladakh route and roads connecting the Line of Control (LoC) areas in Kupwara and Gurez.

Jammu-Srinagar National Highway is still blocked due to major landslides at Kishtwari Pather and Banihal and intermittent stone falling at several places between Nashri and Banihal, Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police said.

Police said people are advised to avoid traveling on National Highway-44 (NH-44) until the road is cleared.

The administration has also issued avalanche warning in many areas of Kashmir and people living in higher areas have been advised to remain alert.

On Wednesday, a massive avalanche blocked the Sindh river in Sonamarg area. The river changed its course and started flowing on the adjacent Srinagar-Ladakh road.
