For the teams coming to next year’s World Cup, Friday was a day to learn from their opponents.
Saturday was to figure out other logistics – sites and timing of the games.
Full schedule of the 2026 tournament CanadaMexico and the United States were revealed on Saturday, a day after the draw divided the 48-team field into a dozen groups of four for the preliminary round. Now each team knows how much travel it will face when playing its first – and possibly only – three games. They can also predict what effect the heat will have.
Even the Canadian coach jessie march — whose team will be north of the border in Toronto and Vancouver when playing in Group B — is taking the weather into account. Canada will play the winner of the European playoff in Toronto, and the game is at 3 p.m., so it could be quite hot.
“We’ll make sure our guys are fit,” Marsh said. “We’re going to make sure they adapt to the weather.”
Heat has long been an issue at the World Cup. For this reason, the Qatar tournament in 2022 was played at the end of the year. The last time the US hosted the World Cup in 1994, the games were mostly during the day. This was convenient for television viewers in Europe, but it caused some heated situations at venues like the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
After more than three decades, that venue is not being used in the 2026 World Cup. Instead, games in the Dallas area will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – and the home of the NFL’s Cowboys has a retractable roof. Same is the case with the stadiums in Houston and Atlanta which are being used.
SoFi Stadium – home of the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, California – has a roof, but air can come in from outside. With five afternoon games on the schedule, Sofi is a place where temperatures can soar.
Mexican sites – Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, Estadio Akron Guadalajara And the Estadio BBVA in Monterrey – could also become a summer concern. American soccer fans are well aware of how oppressive the conditions at the Azteca can be for visiting teams, both in terms of temperature and altitude. But in this tournament, almost all games take place at night at the three Mexican venues.
