Harry Potter Jacobite steam train breaks down on first day back in service

A steam train made famous by the Harry Potter films broke down on its first day back in service.

Jacobite train services across the Highlands were suspended outside Glenfinnan on Monday due to poor weather conditions.

West Coast Railway (WCR) said the team on board was “doing their best” to restore service, but the train had to be rescued by another diesel engine.

The fault has affected the rail network, with ScotRail unable to run trains between Fort William and Mallaig.

Services subsequently resumed after the Jacobites recovered.

WCR apologized to affected customers and said it would provide compensation.

Services are running as planned on Tuesday.

Jacobite has just started its 2024 season after being eliminated Suspended pending safety ruling last month.

WCR is currently awaiting a ruling from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) on whether operations with hinged door carriages can continue.

The service has operated for more than 30 years under an exemption that allows it to operate on the main line using hinged door carriages, which is not normally allowed.

WCR has applied for a renewal exemption and requested interim permission to operate its full fleet of conventional carriages pending a decision by ORR.

However, trains will be “slightly shorter” and will run at “reduced capacity”, which may affect passengers who have previously booked tickets on the famous service.

WCR previously said it would contact customers affected by the change with available options, including the opportunity to rebook their trip.

In December last year, WCR lost a High Court challenge brought by ORR over carriage door safety issues.

The company complained that the multi-million pound cost of retrofitting central locking could “destroy” its business and argued that its door systems were equally secure.

However, the judge dismissed the operator’s lawsuit and concluded that ORR took a “reasonable” approach.

The service takes visitors from Fort William to Mallaig, passing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Jacobite Train featured in the 2002 film harry potter and the Hogwarts Express in Chamber of Secrets.

The film is the second in a series inspired by JK Rowling’s Books about a young wizard and his years at a wizarding school in Scotland.
