‘Hanging in the room’: Kota student commits suicide after failing in exams

Jaipur, October 24 (IANS) A 21-year-old MBBS student of Kota Medical College allegedly committed suicide due to depression due to failure in the examination. Officials said on Friday that the incident took place in Akashvani Colony, which falls under Nayapura police station area of ​​Kota.

According to police station in-charge Vinod Kumar, the deceased Prachi Meena (21) was a third year MBBS student.

She said that she lived in government quarters with her father Kamal Prasad and three siblings.

“Her mother passed away a few years ago and since then, Prachi was living with her family in Kota during her studies,” SHO Kumar said.

He said that Prachi was very upset after failing in the medical examination, her father Kamal Prasad said that she was depressed for the last few days.

“On Thursday, when her elder sister was in another room at home, Prachi ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her room,” he said.

SHO Kumar said his sister screamed for help after discovering the tragic scene.

He said, “Hearing her scream, the neighbors ran, opened the noose and immediately took Prachi to a nearby private hospital. The doctors there referred her to MBS Hospital, where the medical staff declared her brought dead after examination.”

SHO Kumar said preliminary investigation revealed that the cause of suicide was depression related to academic failure.

“No suicide note has been recovered from the spot. However, statements of family members and neighbors indicate that she was mentally disturbed over her exam result,” he said.

Prachi’s father, Kamal Prasad, works at All India Radio, Jhalawar and commutes from Kota daily for his job, he said, adding that on learning about the tragedy, he immediately rushed home.

“Later, the police conducted the postmortem at MBS Hospital and handed over the body to the family for last rites,” he said.

The incident has once again highlighted the increasing pressure and mental health challenges faced by students in Kota, known as the coaching hub of the country.

Officials said the police have registered a case under section 174 of CrPC and have started further investigation.
