Beirut, Lebanon:

Palestinian group Hamas said one of its members was killed in an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, which state media said killed two people.

Since Hamas’s war with Israel broke out in October, its Lebanese ally Hezbollah has exchanged fire with Israel almost every day, while Palestinian groups in Lebanon have also claimed cross-border attacks.

Hamas said a member of its armed wing in Lebanon, Hadi Mustafa, from the Rashidiya Palestinian refugee camp near the coastal city of Tyre, was killed in the attack.

An AFP photographer saw the remains of a car engulfed in flames near the camp.

Lebanon’s official state news agency said a Syrian passerby was also killed.

A U.S. defense official said an attack in January, carried out by Israel, killed Hamas deputy leader Saleh Al-Arouri and six others in Hezbollah’s southern Beirut stronghold, among the most killed during the war. Hamas’s most high-profile figure.

In February, security sources told AFP that a senior Hamas official had survived an assassination attempt south of Beirut.

In response to cross-border firepower, Israel has struck increasingly deeper into targets within Lebanese territory. Israeli attacks on Hezbollah targets in eastern Lebanon on Tuesday and Monday killed two people and one person, security sources said.

According to an AFP tally, at least 321 people have been killed in Lebanon since hostilities began, mainly Hezbollah fighters but also including 55 civilians.

The military said at least 10 soldiers and seven civilians were killed in cross-border exchanges in Israel.
