Half of New Yorkers will flee city in next five years as quality of life declines, poll says

The survey included results from 6,600 households in New York.

A new survey shows that only half of New Yorkers plan to stay in the city within the next five years. A poll released Tuesday by the Citizens’ Budget Council (CBC), a nonprofit think tank, also showed a sharp rise in anger over quality of life, especially in the wake of the pandemic. Polls conducted by multiple media outlets in the United States show that only 30% of respondents said they felt happy in New York.

Think tank staff conducting the 2023 Resident Survey visited 6,600 New York City households in the second half of 2023, according to New York Times (NYT).

It conducted similar investigations in 2017 and 2008.

This poll shows that only 37% of New Yorkers think public safety in their community is very good or good, down from 50% six years ago.

The survey also showed a sharp decline in satisfaction with the quality of education, government services and cleanliness in the city.

Only 37% are satisfied with the level of public safety in their community, and only 34% are satisfied with the cleanliness of their community. Now.

Less than a quarter of respondents appeared satisfied with the overall quality of government services.

“The decline is significant. In 2017, New York City experienced “seven years of a really strong recovery,” said Andrew Rein, chairman of the Citizens Budget Committee. Now.

The survey found that about 43% of residents with an annual income of more than $200,000 agreed to live in their own community, and 45% of residents with an annual income of more than $100,000 also agreed to live in their own community.

Only 30% of New Yorkers making less than $35,000 feel the same way.

New York City Comptroller Brad Lander said in response to the survey: “These findings provide our leaders with a roadmap to strengthen the management of city services – starting with investments that will help keep New Yorkers feeling safe and coping. Our city’s affordability crisis and uneven recovery We look forward to digging deeper into the data and applaud the CBC for engaging New Yorkers directly on the tough challenges we face. So we can build a city where New Yorkers want to live, work and raise families for generations to come City”.
