A fresh case of cheating and criminal conspiracy was registered on Thursday against six people, including “mastermind” Abdul Malik and his wife, in connection with the violence in Haldwani on February 8, police said.

He said that four more rioters were arrested, taking the total number of arrests so far to 78 in the violence that broke out over the demolition of an illegal madrassa in Banbhulpura.

He said that the accused have been accused of hatching a criminal conspiracy to mislead the government departments and the court on the basis of false affidavit.

He told reporters that he has been booked under IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 417 (cheating) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property).

Earlier, three FIRs were registered in connection with the incident. A look-out notice was issued against Malik and his son Abdul Moeed and their properties in the city have been attached.

Police said Abdul Malik had built an illegal madrasa and had strongly opposed its demolition.

His wife also went to court to challenge the municipal corporation’s demolition notice.

Meanwhile, four more rioters were arrested for the violence on Thursday.

In a viral video showing money being distributed among people in the riot-hit area of ​​Haldwani, the SSP said that the people distributing the money belonged to a Hyderabad-based NGO.

He said, investigation has revealed that some people of NGO ‘Hyderabad Youth Courage’ have distributed the money.

“The source of the money and the amount distributed by them is being investigated. Appropriate action will be taken by the police and other concerned departments,” Meena said.

On 8 February, violence broke out over the demolition of an illegally built madrasa in the Banbhulpura area, with locals throwing stones and petrol bombs at municipal corporation staff and police, forcing several police personnel to take shelter in a police station. According to police, six rioters were killed and over a hundred, including police personnel and media persons, were injured in the violence.
