The Jawapi Masjid Management Committee on Thursday filed a case in the Allahabad High Court challenging the Varanasi court order allowing Hindu prayers to be performed in the cellar of the mosque. Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee advisor SFA Naqvi said they had requested an emergency hearing.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court asked the committee to approach the high court against the Varanasi district court’s order on Wednesday. A Varanasi court has ruled that priests can offer prayers in front of the idol in the cellar of the Jawapi Masjid.

The prayers will be conducted by the Kashgar Golden Temple Trust and the ‘pujari’ appointed by the petitioner, who claimed that his grandfather had performed worship in the cellar till December 1993.
