Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday informed the Assembly that the Gurez border area in Bandipora district is emerging as an offbeat tourist destination.

Omar told the Assembly that the Tourism Department has launched projects under the Capex budget to upgrade and develop Gurez as a tourist destination.

The Chief Minister, who also holds the Tourism portfolio, said that during the current financial year 2025-26, the works are being executed in coordination with the District Administration, Bandipora, which includes identification and transfer of land for the purpose.

The Chief Minister further confirmed that Gurez Valley was awarded the prestigious “Best Off-Beat Destination in India (Gold)” award in 2022 in recognition of its pristine natural beauty, unique landscape and sustainable tourism initiatives.

He said the award highlights the immense tourism potential of Gurez Valley and its growing recognition as one of the country’s most preferred offbeat travel destinations.

Responding to a question from MLA Gurez for a special scheme for emerging off-beat destinations, the CM said that the Tourism Department has already identified Gurez as a potential off-beat destination, and whenever a dedicated scheme is launched by the Government of India, the department will recommend Gurez for inclusion and development under that programme.

Responding to a supplementary question by Gurez MLA Nazir Ahmed Khan, the Chief Minister said, “At present there is no helicopter service for tourism purposes. The existing helicopter service operates mainly for the local people and patients as the area remains cut off during the winter season.”

However, he said the administration is open to private participation in tourism-related aviation services.

“If any private company intends to start helicopter services for tourists in Gurez, we will extend full support. Although no such proposal is under consideration at present, if anyone comes forward the government can examine and explore it,” he said.

Regarding the proposal of light and sound show in Gurez, the Chief Minister said that this idea is being considered.

“It has been suggested to host it at Habba Khatoon mountain. We will assess its technical and logistical feasibility and if possible, we can do so,” he said.
