Google Pixel 9 series may get emergency satellite connectivity feature

By | Published | No Comments

Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 8a at its annual I/O event next month, but smartphone enthusiasts are already anticipating the debut of the Pixel 9 series this fall. The regular Pixel 9 recently appeared in a new set of CAD-based renders, and a new leak suggests Google may have some big plans for its flagship smartphone range this year. The tech giant will reportedly add satellite connectivity to the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. This feature is similar to Apple’s SOS feature and is said to also be coming to Pixel Fold 2 and 5G-enabled Pixel tablets.

Well-known intelligence expert Kamila Wojciechowska quoted a Google insider in a report from Android Authority: claim The Google Pixel 9’s Tensor G4 chipset will feature the new Samsung Modem 5400, which will be “faster and more power-efficient” than the Samsung 5300 modem paired with the Pixel 8’s Tensor G3 SoC. According to reports, the new modem will have an upgraded software stack to provide better stability. This will make the Pixel 9 series the first phones to support Android’s native satellite implementation in Android 15. The feature will reportedly be initially powered by T-Mobile in partnership with SpaceX. Other providers can join later.

Google’s Pixel Fold 2 is also expected to run on the new Tensor G4 chipset, which will first debut on the Pixel 9 series. Additionally, the company is reportedly developing a 5G tablet codenamed “clementine” with the same chipset and modem. Therefore, both devices are expected to come with new satellite connectivity features. According to reports, the satellite link will allow texting. In addition, a special “Satellite Gateway” application will allow easy communication with emergency services via the “Emergency SOS” function.

Additionally, the report states that users will be asked basic questions to determine the emergency situation. Users may choose to notify emergency contacts and send messages to emergency services to get the help they need. Questions may also include predefined answers to choose from to make the process faster.

Google is expected to release the Pixel 9 series in October. The phone is expected to run Android 15 and be an upgrade from last year’s Pixel 8 series.
