If you have experience using Apple iMessage, or are familiar with sending text messages through messaging apps like WhatsApp, you know how easy it is to edit messages. Not only does this allow you to avoid potential embarrassment, but it also keeps the conversation flowing without the need for corrections.

Despite getting RCS support, Google Messages has been missing this feature. That all seems to be changing soon, though, as the app is reportedly capable of editing messages after they’ve been sent.

AssembleDebug on TheSpAndroid discovered the same evidence in the code of the Google Messages app. The report states that the editing functionality works when a user long-presses a message in an RCS chat. After this, a pencil icon will appear on the top row. After clicking on the pencil icon, a text box will open for you to edit your message.

The report further states that “While the edit button appears, the feature does not work as expected as there may still be some work to be done.” This could mean it could be a while before we see its public rollout. The report also suggests that it could enter testing by the end of this month or next month.

That said, this could be a useful addition for users who primarily communicate through the Google Messages app. Even though the user base is quite small, it’s still a valuable feature.
