Google Message Beta and Gemini AI rolled out to some users: Report

Google has reportedly started rolling out a beta version of its new Google Messages app, which features Gemini AI, the company’s artificial intelligence (AI)-powered chatbot. The tech giant first announced the integration of its AI assistant into its messaging app last month, along with several new features for Android devices. According to reports, some users are now discovering Gemini contact options that allow them to have one-on-one conversations with the AI. However, this feature is only available on certain devices.

according to a Report Via 9to5Google , some Google Messages beta users have received a new update that will make Gemini appear as a contact when clicking the New Conversation floating action button (FAB). Gemini AI appears with its logo and a short description that reads “Write, plan, learn, and more with Google AI.” Clicking this icon will open a new chat where the user can talk to the chatbot. Those wishing to become beta testers can head to the Google Play Store, search for Google Messages, and click on the link to join the beta program.

It’s worth noting that this feature isn’t available to all beta testers. The report mentions several criteria that users must meet before chatting with Google Gemini. First, the update is said to only be available for select devices, including the Pixel 6 series or later, Pixel Fold, Samsung Galaxy S22 series or later, and the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip. It’s unclear if other devices will also display the feature.

Beta testers should also log in through a personal Google account, not a Workspace account or Family Link account. Android’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) feature should also be enabled in the Messages app, and if you live in Canada, the language should be set to English or French.

Gemini AI in the Google Messages app is reportedly powered by the Gemini 1.0 Pro large language model (LLM). While users can have individual conversations with the chatbot, there is no option to use Gemini in conversations with others or in groups. Users can also upload images and change the color of message bubbles. The chatbot does not support voice conversations. Additionally, the report states that despite RCS being enabled, conversations with Gemini were not end-to-end encrypted.
