Google Maps gets three new features to help users plan trips

Google Maps is getting three new updates designed to help users with their travels. To provide users with personalized recommendations, Google adds a curated list of recommendations from popular websites and the Google Maps community to Maps. The second Google Maps update lets users compile lists of places they want to visit and track where they’ve been. Additionally, Google is bringing artificial intelligence to Maps to provide summarized key insights into search locations. The company is also bringing design updates to Google Maps.

Alphabet-owned Google passes blog post Thursday (March 28). The first map update will help users discover curated recommendations from popular websites and the Google Maps community. When users search for a city in Maps, they can swipe up to see a curated list of recommendations from people who know the city well. Additionally, users can take advantage of recommendations from sites like Lonely Planet and OpenTable. The feature will launch this week in 40 cities in the United States and Canada. The list can be saved on the map app or shared with contacts.

Google Maps is preparing three types of curated listings. The “Popular” list will include “places that have recently surged in popularity on the map.” “Hot” lists identify places that are consistently popular with the mapping community. Finally, a “Gem” list will help find quality restaurants that are still unknown.

Additionally, Google is making it easier to create listings in Google Maps. With this update, users can create lists with a click new list button from Saved Label. This will help organize where they want to go and keep track of where they have been. When traveling, these lists can be used to organize recommendations (such as itineraries). Users will be able to link to content listings from their social channels. The updates will roll out globally on Android and iOS later this month.

Finally, Google will now use artificial intelligence to identify “key insights from the Maps community.” This AI-powered feature will use photos and reviews of a place to summarize what people like about a place when they search for it on Maps.

Additionally, Google confirmed that the Maps app is getting a new design update. It is confirmed that it will get a refreshed home screen with fewer tabs and new pin colors.

At Google I/O 2023, the search giant repeatedly told us it cares about artificial intelligence, launching its first foldable phone and Pixel-branded tablet. This year, the company will use artificial intelligence technology to enhance its apps, services and Android operating system.
