Google has fired 28 employees over a disruptive sit-in over a contract with the Israeli government, a spokesman said Thursday.

Tuesday’s demonstration was organized by Apartheid No Tech, a group that has long opposed Project Light Cloud, Google’s $1.2 billion joint contract with Amazon to provide cloud services to the Israeli government .

Video of the demonstration showed police arresting Google employees at the office of Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian in Sunnyvale, California, according to a post on advocacy group X (formerly Twitter).

The advocacy group said Kurian’s office was occupied for 10 hours.

Workers held signs that read “Googlers stand against genocide,” referring to accusations surrounding Israel’s attack on Gaza.

Apartheid No Tech, which has also staged protests in New York and Seattle, pointed to an April 12 article in Time magazine reporting on a draft contract in which Google charged the Israeli Defense Ministry more than $1 million for consulting services.

A Google spokesperson said a “small number” of employees had “disrupted” some Google locations, but that the protests were “part of a longer-term movement by a group of organizations and people who largely do not work at Google.”

“After refusing multiple requests to leave the premises, law enforcement stepped in to remove them to ensure office safety,” a Google spokesperson said. “To date, we have completed individual investigations that have resulted in the termination of 28 employees. “We will continue to investigate and take action as necessary.”

A Google spokesman said Israel is one of “many” governments to which Google provides cloud computing services.

“This effort does not target highly sensitive, classified or military workloads related to weapons or intelligence services,” a Google spokesperson said.
