“Godzilla x Kong: New Empire” easily beat out two challengers to stay at the top of the box office for the second week in a row, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

The “MonsterVerse” mashup was released last weekend and exceeded box office expectations by $80 million, but its second weekend gross was $31.7 million, down 60% from its debut.
With the exception of 2014’s “Godzilla,” the Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures release of the film, directed by Adam Wingard, is the biggest hit to date. It’s better than any of the studio’s recent monster movies.

But with a global box office of $361.1 million in two weeks, “Godzilla x King Kong” may eventually surpass the $529 million global box office of 2014’s “Godzilla.” The latest one, a collaboration between Godzilla and King Kong, cost about $135 million to produce.

Godzilla x Kong extends its box office dominance as another primate-themed movie hits theaters. Dev Patel’s “Monkey Man,” a revenge thriller set in India, was distributed by Universal Pictures and opened in 3,029 theaters in North America with an estimated box office of $10.1 million.

This marks a strong debut for Patel in his limited-budget directorial debut, in which he stars in a bloody and politically charged action extravaganza. “Monkeyman,” which cost about $10 million to make, was abandoned by its original studio, Netflix, before Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions swooped in.

Another new film released over the weekend, “First Omen,” produced by Disney’s 20th Century Pictures, failed to make a huge impact on moviegoers. The film ranked fourth with an estimated $8.4 million from 3,375 theaters, while taking in $9.1 million overseas. The R-rated horror film, which cost about $30 million to make, is a prequel to the 1976 original film directed by Richard Donner and starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick.

Directed by Akasha Stevenson and starring Nell Tiger Free, Tofik Barhom and Bill Nighy, this version follows 2006’s The Omen, which debuted at the box office It grossed $16 million and ended up with a box office of $119 million.

The tepid opening of “First Omen” pushed Sony’s “Ghostbusters: Ice Empire” into third place with $9 million in its third week. The sci-fi comedy sequel grossed $88.8 million domestically and $138 million worldwide.

Warner Bros. ‘Dune: Part 2 continues to perform strongly. It added $7.2 million in week six, down just 37%, bringing its domestic total to $264 million.

One of the best performances of the week is in China, where Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning film The Boy and the Heron arrives in Chinese cinemas. The critically acclaimed Japanese animation is setting records for non-Chinese animated films. After its release on Wednesday, the five-day box office total exceeded $70 million, setting a new high for Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli.

U.S. and Canadian theaters expect ticket sales from Friday to Sunday, according to Comscore. Final domestic data will be released on Monday.
