Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS coming soon: Break on operations on functional extension for 2 days

Authorities are preparing for a 25 km extension on the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) beyond Duhai to Meerut South section and for this, operations on the existing section will be suspended on January 20 and 21.

In a statement, the National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC), the agency building the RRTS, announced that currently, trial runs are being conducted on the section between Duhai and Meerut South stations.

Over the next two days, efforts will be focused on streamlining and facilitating the installation, upgrading the signaling system, conducting extensive trials and completing other related works required for operations on the upcoming 25-km stretch beyond Duhai and Meerut South.

“NaMo Bharat train services on the 17 km long priority section between Sahibabad to Duhai depot will not be available for passengers for two days i.e. Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21,” the statement said.

The Regional Rapid Transit System is a high-speed rail-based commuter transit service. It is a new, dedicated and comfortable commuter service, connecting regional nodes in the NCR, initially planned in 1998–99.

It provides reliable, high-frequency and point-to-point regional travel at high speeds along dedicated routes. It connects many small towns to larger cities, reducing congestion in the area while ensuring better work opportunities.

This is not a metro and not even a traditional railway. Officials say this is the best of the two. Compared to the Metro, the RRTS serves passengers wishing to travel relatively long distances with fewer stops and higher speeds. Compared to conventional railways, it is faster, more reliable and more frequent.

NCRTC has implemented European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 with critical interfaces like ETCS communication backbone over Long Term Evolution (LTE) for the first time in the world.

Officials said rigorous testing is needed to ensure passenger safety and uninterrupted operations.

“During these two days, activities like interface testing and integration of onboard signaling system with the rolling stock will be conducted. Additionally, new software for interlocking, radio block center, LTE EPC (common to the entire corridor) and Ethernet Virtual Circuit (EVC) will be examined,” the statement said.

After the completion of signaling work from Monday, regular train operations will start on its normal timings.

NCRTC said the suspension of operations on Saturday and Sunday is aimed at minimizing the impact on passengers.

The 25 km stretch between Duhai and Meerut South stations is the next section of the RRTS corridor to be opened to the public after the priority section.

This section consists of four stations: Murad Nagar, Modi Nagar South, Modi Nagar North and Meerut South.

The construction of viaduct has already been completed till Meerut South. Subsequently, various system works including track-laying, OHE installation, signaling and telecom and electrical are progressing rapidly in this section, officials said.

In October 2023, the first section of the Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) was inaugurated.

This 17 km long stretch is in Ghaziabad, covering Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Guldhar, Duhai and Duhai Depot.
