George North: Wales center quits international rugby after Six Nations

George North has announced that Wales’ final Six Nations game against Italy on Saturday will be his last international rugby match.

The 31-year-old center said it was “the right time to leave” after a 14-year career.

North will play in his 121st game Wales Warren Gatland’s side aim to avoid bottom spot after he was recalled to face Italy six kingdoms table.

He wrote on the

“I’m blessed to be able to fulfill my dream. I’m excited for the next chapter.

“Thank you all for your support over the years.”

Mr North burst onto the international rugby scene at the age of 18, playing against South Africa Debuted in 2010.

That day he became the youngest player to score on his debut for Wales in nearly 117 years.

Mr North was born in England and grew up in North Wales from the age of two, playing rugby from an early age.

He has racked up 47 tries in a 14-year career and has toured twice with the British and Irish Lions, first in Australia in 2013 and again in New Zealand four years later.

Wales men’s head coach praised Mr North’s “incredible career”. Mr Gatland said: “George has had an incredible career that began at the age of 18 and has made a huge contribution to Welsh rugby.

“The way he burst onto the scene. I remember watching him play and thinking we need to limit this kid.

“What he did as a rugby player was unbelievable but I think the most important thing is how he contributed to the team as a person over the years. How positive and encouraging he was in and around the team Human heart, that’s what people don’t see in terms of his organization off the field.
