'Gazipur landfill fire is example of AAP corruption': Delhi BJP chief

In 2019, the height of the Gazipur landfill was 65 meters, which was 8 meters lower than Qutub Minar.

New Delhi:

Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva on Monday inspected the Ghazipur landfill site where garbage caught fire the previous day and accused it of being an example of “corruption” by the BJP government.

He claimed that the dump would be demolished within a year of the BJP coming to power in Delhi.

There was no immediate reaction from the Aam Aadmi Party to Sachdeva’s accusations.

Thick smoke was still rising from the sky hours after a major fire broke out at the Ghazipur landfill site on Monday.

According to the Delhi Fire Department, a fire broke out at the landfill on Sunday night due to gas generated by the mountains of garbage.

“The Ghazipur garbage dump is a direct example of Kejriwal government’s corruption. They had promised to clear this garbage mountain by 2023, but yet another garbage mountain has appeared here. This is because of corruption in MCD. More than half of the machines are wrong – why not Fix them?” Sachdeva said.

“It will be removed within a year of the BJP forming the government in Delhi,” he added.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal promised to clear landfills by December 31, 2023, ahead of the 2022 MCD elections.

Still, the mountain of trash continues to grow.

In 2019, the height of the Gazipur landfill was 65 meters, which was only 8 meters lower than Qutub Minar.

In 2017, two people died when part of the garbage dump fell onto a nearby road.

In 2022, three fires were reported at the Gazipur landfill, including one on March 28 that took more than 50 hours to put out.
