Gallup: Confidence in U.S. institutions continues to decline

Public confidence in the U.S. government, judiciary and military has plummeted, putting the U.S. behind most other G7 countries, a new Gallup analysis shows.

About 68% of Americans lack confidence in their own government.

Confidence in the judiciary is as low as 42%.

Even the traditionally popular U.S. military has reportedly seen a decline in public confidence, falling from 90% in 2021 to 81% last year.

The G7 consists of the major industrial countries: Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Among the G7, the German public has the lowest level of confidence in its military, with nearly 60% expressing a lack of confidence.

Although the United States spends more on the military than all other G7 countries combined, the American public appears divided over the nation’s military budget.

About 35% thought spending was too high, 29% thought it was too low, and 33% thought the amount spent was appropriate.

“There’s no hard evidence to explain any of this,” Gallup analyst Benedict Wiggs told VOA. “These data feel like they’re part of a broader trend among Americans that goes beyond even people to Confidence in its political system.”

Experts link public trust in governance institutions to the quality of public service delivery, effective measures to combat corruption and abuse of power, and progress in addressing income and wealth inequality.

“The effectiveness of public institutions depends on the trust that citizens and businesses have in them,” the World Bank said in a report last year.

Public confidence in U.S. institutions is waning, and that confidence is not limited to government agencies.

Trust in churches and organized religion continues to decline, with a record 30% of Americans saying they had “very little” confidence last year — the highest number since Gallup began tracking the question in 1973.

The erosion of trust is also affecting the media, with more than 40% of Americans reporting low confidence, especially in newspapers and television.
