Former U.S. Senator and Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman has died at age 82 of complications from a fall, his family said Wednesday.

“He died with his beloved wife Hadassah and family by his side,” the statement said. “Senator Lieberman’s love for God, his family and America was evident throughout his life of service to the public good. “

Lieberman was the Democratic vice presidential candidate in the 2000 election, won by Republican George W. Bush.

Lieberman’s funeral is scheduled for Friday in his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut.
