Anthony Joshuathis British The boxer and former world heavyweight champion was hospitalized with “minor injuries” after a car crash in Nigeria on Monday killed two other passengers.
this Lagos State Information Commissioner Gbenga Omotoso confirmed the accident in a post on X, adding that the government had sent an ambulance to the crash site.
The accident occurred at around 11 a.m. local time on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, a main road connecting Ogun State and the country’s economic capital, Lagos. Nigeria is the homeland of Joshua’s parents.
The Ogun State Police said in a statement: “The vehicle Mr. Joshua was traveling in, a Lexus SUV, was involved in an accident and the situation is currently being investigated. Joshua, who was sitting in the rear of the vehicle, suffered minor injuries and is being treated with the other injured person.”
Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps, said in a statement that preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle “was speeding on the corridor, lost control while overtaking, and hit a stationary truck on the roadside.”
The Ogun State government said “preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot”. The Associated Press has not been able to independently verify their identities.

Photos on social media showed the boxer wincing in pain as he was rescued from a wrecked vehicle.
“Anthony Joshua is being treated for injuries at an undisclosed hospital,” Ogun state police chief Lanre Ogunlowo told The Associated Press. He said he had no further information on the extent of the injuries.

“We’re trying to contact Anthony and at the same time we don’t want to speculate on his condition, but thankfully from what I’ve seen in the images, he looks fine.”
Joshua briefly attended boarding school in Nigeria when he was 11 years old. He returned there after 17 years in 2019 ahead of his fight with Andy Ruiz Jr.
Joshua has been in talks to fight fellow Briton Tyson Fury in 2026.
