Ford It has taken a major step towards re-entering the Indian market by trademarking the nameplate of its electric SUV, the Mustang Mach-E.

The move suggests that the US carmaker is moving forward with plans to launch the Mustang Mach-E to the Indian audience.

Ford initially confirmed the launch of the Mustang Mach-E in India, before the company ended local operations in 2021.

According to a report by Teambhp, the Mustang Mach-E is expected to be imported into India as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) under the government’s import regulations, which allow the import of up to 2,500 units without certification.

Although Ford is yet to officially announce the pricing of the Mustang Mach-E in India, it is expected to cost over Rs 1 crore.

However, the electric SUV will benefit from the lower Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate applicable to electric vehicles in India.

In international markets, the Mustang Mach-E is available in rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations, as well as standard and extended-range variants.

The entry-level RWD Mach-E is equipped with a 72kWh battery that produces 269 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque, and has a range of 470 kilometers. The extended-range version is equipped with a 91kWh battery that provides 294 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque, and has a claimed range of 600 kilometers.

The AWD version with a 91kWh battery produces 351 horsepower and 580 Nm of torque, with a range of 548 kilometers. The top-spec GT AWD model is powered by a 91kWh battery producing 487 hp and 850 Nm of torque, with a range of 489 km.

Ford’s decision to trademark the Mustang Mach-E nameplate comes after the company recently announced the sale of its Chennai plant.

Ford’s decision to retain the plant despite receiving multiple offers from automakers including Vinfast, MG and Tata Motors has further fueled speculation about its re-entry into the Indian market.

If launched in India, the Mustang Mach-E will compete with luxury electric cars like the Mercedes-Benz EQE, BMW iX and Audi Q8 e-tron.

Ford is also expanding the performance lineup of the 2024 Mustang Mach-E with the launch of a Mach-E Rally version designed for off-road driving.

This version will feature a raised suspension, additional underbody protection and a tweaked dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain from the Mach-E GT performance version.

Additionally, unnamed optional performance upgrades are expected to deliver the fastest 0-60 mph acceleration time of any production Mach-E model.

Ford also announced a Bronze Appearance Package for the Mach-E GT, which includes a bronze grille, badging and 20-inch wheels, as well as new color options of black, white and green. The GT version of the Mach-E will also feature 10-way performance front seats.
