Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill requiring public schools to teach communist history from kindergarten through 12th grade.

Beginning in the 2026-27 (school year), the course on communism will cover its history in the United States and globally, emphasizing the atrocities committed under various communist regimes.

DeSantis said it’s important to provide students with the truth about communism. He signed the bill on Wednesday.

Curriculum for each grade will need to be “age and developmentally appropriate,” and will be developed by the Florida Department of Education, AL News reported.

Al News quoted DeSantis as saying: “My view is that when they are in our schools, we might as well provide them with the truth because a lot of colleges will tell them how great communism is, so we are setting up the appropriate Foundation.”

The bill’s signing coincides with the 63rd anniversary of the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion, the last attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro’s communist regime in Cuba.

DeSantis emphasized his commitment to educating people about the realities of communism, saying: “We are committed to telling the truth about this ideology, and we are going to make sure that people have a very accurate understanding of the human carnage that communist regimes inflicted on history. ”

Additionally, the bill established the Institute for Inter-American Freedom at Miami Dade College to promote democracy in the Americas and preserve the ideals of a free society.

“Through this college, Florida International University (FIU) and Miami Dade College will work together to ensure that we preserve democracy in the Americas. Our memories are only as good as ours,” said Madeline Pumariega, president of Miami Dade College. Al News reports.

The law also outlines plans to establish a museum on the history of communism.

DeSantis said there is potential interest from Miami officials in hosting the museum.

“I’m sure there are a lot of people here who would like to see it in Miami. We’ll see how that plays out,” DeSantis said.

The State and Education Departments are tasked with recommending specific details for the museum to the Legislature by Dec. 1.
