Fire breaks out on upward-bound Godan Express near Nashik Road, no casualties

Some passengers jumped out of the carriage in panic

Nashik:

A fire broke out in the seat-cum-luggage compartment of the Mumbai-Gorakhpur Gordan Express near Nashik Road station in Maharashtra this afternoon. Officials said there were no reports of casualties.

A fire broke out in a train on its way from Mumbai to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, causing some passengers to jump off the train when it came to a stop, officials said.

The train reached Nashik Road, about 200 kilometers from Mumbai, at 2:43 pm as scheduled and departed four minutes after stopping.

They said that as the train passed the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) water filtration plant between Nashik Road and Gorewadi railway gate, thick smoke could be seen coming from the seat-cum-luggage rake (SLR) carriage at the rear of the train.

Officials said the passengers on the bogie alerted the police after seeing the smoke and when the guard was informed, he immediately stopped the vehicle and informed the railways.

As soon as the train stopped, some passengers jumped out in panic. Pritesh Dubey, deputy station officer, Nashik Road, informed the fire brigade about the fire.

Railway crews tried to extinguish the flames with foam before fire brigade arrived at the scene. But officials said it would be difficult to put out the fire with water because of the high-voltage power supply nearby.

At 3:28 pm, railway staff removed the bogie and the train headed for its destination. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at around 4pm, they said, adding that no injuries were reported.
