Ottawa – Farmers of BC ostrich who have lost 15 percent of their herd in the outbreak of avian flu in the last winter, are taking their fights with the Federal Court of appeal today.
The case is an appeal for the June 1 decision in the federal court, which biased with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The agency ordered the owners of the farm of universal ostrich after the death of 69 ostrich in December and January.
The farm applied for a judicial review of the CFIA’s decision, but was denied.
Farmers say their herd is involved in research in natural immunity of ostrich, and that the remaining birds are healthy.
The CFIA notes that the version of the avian flu found on the farm was not first found in Canada, and the highly infectious virus can infect wild birds, mammals and humans.
