His visit comes at a time when the memory of July 13 is celebrated as the day of martyrs in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir – no longer in the official list of holidays. The removal of the day from the public calendar in 2020 has criticized various political quarters, especially from the PDP, who sees it as an attempt to eradicate an important part of the political history of Kashmir.
In the July 13, 1931 incident, the Central Jail is a symbol of killing 22 Kashmiris by Dogra forces outside Srinagar, while they were opposing autocratic rule. The day was traditionally seen as a symbol of resistance to respect their sacrifice and against atrocities. (KDC)
