Citing reports, Samyukta Kisan Morcha (apolitical) leader Jagit Dallewal rejected the Centre’s plan to procure pulses (tur, urad and masoor), maize and cotton at guaranteed minimum support prices (MSP).

Talking to reporters, Mr. Dhalewal said that as per the ‘C2 + 50 per cent’ formula recommended by the Swaminathan Committee, farmers will have to do MSP on all crops to survive. He also dismissed claims that MSP for all crops would involve huge expenditure.

Mr Dhalewal said the government was importing palm oil worth Rs 138 crore but could not spend it by providing farmers with MSP for all crops.

“The government should not evade its responsibility. To save the country’s farmers, a law on MSP should be enacted,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kisan Mazdoor Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher told reporters that protesting farmers will squat on railway tracks at several places in Punjab, including Ferozepur, Amritsar, Rupnagar and Gurdaspur districts .

In the fourth round of talks with farmer leaders on February 18, a group of three federal ministers proposed that government agencies would purchase pulses, maize and cotton at MSP for five years after reaching an agreement with farmers.

The demands include providing pension to farmers and farm workers, no increase in power tariffs, withdrawal of police cases and justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, restoration of the Land Acquisition Act 2013, and provision of financial aid to farmer families who suffered violence Provide compensation.
