Family members of Tamil Nadu politicians participate in polls, setting off new online trend

As the state gears up for the first phase of Lok Sabha polls on April 19, not only candidates across politically divided lines but also their near and dear ones are reaching out to voters seeking electoral blessings.

The daughters of PMK-NDA candidate Sowmiya Anbumani from Dharmapuri assembly constituency are on the ground seeking votes for their mother. Similarly, Anuradha, wife of Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) president TTV Dhinakaran, was photographed traveling around the constituency in Theni in an open van to seek votes for her husband.

Dayanidhi Maran, the Chennai central candidate of the ruling DMK, was photographed canvassing for votes, with her daughter in the background. While the candidates represent rival political forces, what binds them in this context are the first public appearances of their family members on the campaign trail.

Although “dynasty politics” figures prominently in the political discourse of the Lok Sabha elections, the candidates’ families are unfazed as they step out of the shadows and into the midst of the people, becoming their loved ones’ biggest cheerleaders.

However, the trend of bringing family members together to canvass has raised some eyebrows. But it’s sure to catch on as the voting date approaches.

Trendsetting former AIADMK minister C Vijayabaskar along with his daughter Rithanya Priyadarshini canvassed for votes during the 2021 Assembly elections.

Leaders said they fully supported this approach because they had loved ones and family members who provided them with “moral support” during the campaign and also boosted their confidence to participate in the election.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan told ANI over phone: “Family members provide moral support to candidates and also send a strong message to voters that their families support them. If the candidate’s spouse and children are with They campaign together, and through campaigning, it can better connect with voters, especially female voters. It also teaches people that candidates are human beings after all and must support and feed their loved ones.”

While these apolitical relatives were canvassing for candidates, people such as Stalin, the top leader of the ruling Democratic Workers Party, and Kanimozhi, the current lawmaker, also joined the crowd to pay tribute to their father, the late founder and chief of the party. Votes are sought in the name of the minister. Karangal Karunanidhi. Similarly, state Sports Minister Udayanidhi Stalin has also been campaigning for his chief minister father. Earlier, the father also campaigned for his son in the assembly elections.

Ramadoss, founder of Pattali Makkal Katchi, also campaigned for his son Anbumani.

AIADMK spokesperson Kovai Sathyan also welcomed the growing trend, saying, “There is a difference between AIADMK candidates campaigning with their families and their DMK and PMK rivals doing so. DMK and PMK are family-run parties. So when they’re candidates come out campaigning with their families, it’s like telling people who’s next. This is the message these parties want to convey to the people. Regardless, it’s all emotions at work. “

While opinions on this trend may vary from person to person, as the voting date approaches, these candidates are doing everything they can, including bringing their loved ones to the forefront.
