Mumbai:

As general elections are underway in the country, industry experts say nine lakh temporary jobs in various roles are expected to be created due to the elections.

The first phase of general elections was held on 19 April in 102 constituencies across 21 states and union territories. The last phase of 2024 Lok Sabha elections will be held on June 1.

“The exact number of temporary jobs created during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections across the country will depend on various factors such as the scale of the elections, the number of polling stations and the requirements of election-related activities. However, on our platform, CEO and Co-Founder of WorkIndia “We expect at least 9 lakh jobs during the elections,” Nilesh Dungarwal told PTI.

He said the temporary jobs created during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections include a variety of roles covering various aspects of the electoral process.

He said some of the common positions include polling station officers, election clerks, security personnel, data entry operators, transport coordinators and administrative staff, who are important to ensure the smooth functioning of the electoral process and maintain transparency throughout the elections.

“During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the job roles that saw significant growth on our platform were accounting (80 percent), data entry jobs (64 percent), security personnel (86 percent), back office (70 percent), Delivery, drivers, field sales and retail (65 percent), manual jobs (82 percent), content writing (67 percent), among others,” he said.

Reiterating this view, Aditya Narayan Mishra, HR Director and CEO, CIEL, said that in the last six months it has been estimated that around 2,00,000 temporary posts have come up in preparation for the upcoming elections.

He said these roles span across a variety of areas critical to election preparation such as data analysis, planning, public relations, market surveys, media relations, content design, content marketing, social media marketing, AI strategies and project management.

“As election campaign activities increase, for a period of 8-13 weeks till the end of polling in the respective constituencies, we expect a huge increase in activities for event management, printing, transportation, food and beverages, catering , security, IT network management and analytics. The service providers will employ an estimated 4,00,000 people on a temporary basis.”

Since these jobs are just for elections, this surge in temporary employment will not impact the current job market dynamics, given the current imbalance between job supply and demand.

Kartik Narayan, CEO – Staffing, TeamLease Services, said that given the huge scale of the upcoming elections, it is anticipated that a large number of temporary posts will be created.

“With over a million polling stations across India, each booth is expected to employ at least 1-2 temporary gig workers for the duration of the electoral process,” he told PTI.

When asked whether these temporary jobs affect the job market, he said, the emergence of temporary employment opportunities during elections may temporarily affect sectors that are accustomed to promoting such employment, especially Basically logistics and e-commerce.

“This effect is particularly pronounced during the summer season, which is characterized by increased consumer demand for durable goods, which may intensify competition for workers with similar skill sets. Yet, this effect is localized and “Is short-lived, as election-related operations typically unfold over a brief time frame and generally do not disrupt broader employment patterns in these areas,” he said.

The duration of these temporary posts generally starts about 1-2 weeks before the start of election proceedings and lasts for the entire election period, which will be held in seven phases, Narayan said.

He said that most of these roles will remain active till the completion of the election process at each respective location.

RP Yadav, CMD, Genius Consultants, said a significant workforce of over 1,00,000 temporary employees is required who will be required to assist in arranging food, maintaining vehicles, managing campaign materials like programmes, posters and microphones and building meetings. Need to handle various tasks including. Podium and barricades.

Yadav said electricians, sweepers, social media campaigners, event managers, content writers, content creators are some of the jobs that are in high demand during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Talking about the remuneration for these temporary jobs during the elections, he said, individual workers engaged for specific tasks can earn between Rs 15,000-40,000 depending on their role and the scope of work involved.

“Additionally, the drivers appointed to provide transport services during the campaign are paid on a per day basis, they usually get Rs 5,000-8,000 per day,” he said.
