Record rainfall has hit England in the year and a half to last month, new figures show.

According to provisional data from the Met Office, 1,695.9 millimeters of rainfall will fall between October 2022 and March 2024.

This is the highest rainfall in England for any 18-month period since the organization began collecting comparable data in 1836.

It beat the previous record set in the previous month (1,680.2 mm), covering September 2022 to February 2024.

The third highest figure on record was 1,668.4mm, set in the 18 months to January 2021.

Across the UK apart from England, the 18 months before last month were the fourth wettest on record, with 2,085.6mm of rainfall.

Met Office scientist Emily Carlisle said: “Many people will remember how wet March was, with the impact of a series of fronts and low pressures never seeming too far away from the UK.

“After a wet winter and a wet start to the year, the ground in many areas is already very saturated, which has increased sensitivity to rainfall events in recent weeks.”

It follows unsettled conditions across much of the country over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Looking ahead to the rest of the week, the Met Office said “showers and showers” will continue over the coming days and the weather will become “increasingly windy”.

They added: “After a cold start, it was rather mild in the south and increasingly mild in the north.”
