Elon Musk's X is testing 'adult content' community for users

Elon Musk has publicly stated that he believes X should carry almost any content that is not illegal

X, the social network formerly known as Twitter, is testing a feature that would allow users to create or join communities focused on “adult content” or other “not safe for work” material.

Users who create communities within the app can specify in settings that their groups “contain adult-sensitive content,” according to screenshots discovered by Daniel Buchuk, a Watchful analyst who tracks app development testing. Group X will be labeled “Adult Content”. According to a screenshot of the rules, users who fail to tag their communities may see some content filtered or removed.

Communities on X can be private, and it appears the social media network will eventually require age verification for groups containing adult content. X’s policy currently restricts “graphic media, adult nudity and sexual conduct to viewers under 18 or those whose profile does not include a date of birth.”

A spokesman for X confirmed Chung was an employee but declined to comment further.

U.S. lawmakers have focused on protecting teenagers and other young people online in recent months, including during a controversial Senate hearing in January that included X’s Linda Yaccarino ( Several social network CEOs, including Linda Yaccarino, attended the hearing.

Making “NSFW” groups publicly available may be another way for X to try to differentiate itself from other mainstream social networking services. Adult content was already present on Twitter long before owner Elon Musk took over and changed the company’s name, with former Twitter executives even considering an OnlyFans-style subscription service for adult content creators. According to The Verge , Twitter canceled the project after deciding that the company was not prepared to regulate “harmful sexual content” including child pornography.

Musk has been vocal about his belief that X should carry almost any content that is not illegal. X allows posts about topics such as sexual behavior if the user marks them as sensitive, but its policy prohibits adult content in live videos and profile pictures. It is also against the rules to promote these themes as part of an ad.

It’s unclear when the test will be available to a wider audience, and it’s still possible the feature will be pulled.
