Elon Musk’s X bans over 200,000 accounts in India for promoting explicit content

Elon Musk-run X Corp banned a record 2,31,215 accounts in India between December 26 and January 25, mainly for promoting child sexual exploitation and non-consensual nudity .

The Weibo platform, which has experienced turmoil under Musk’s leadership, also shut down 1,945 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform.

During the reporting period, X banned a total of 2,33,160 accounts in the country. In its monthly report on compliance with the new IT Rules 2021, X said it received 2,525 complaints from Indian users through its grievance redressal mechanism during the same time period.

Additionally, X handled 40 account suspension appeals.

“After reviewing the specific circumstances, we reversed the suspension on nine of the accounts. The remaining reported accounts remain suspended,” the company said.

“During the reporting period, we received 19 requests related to general issues with the account,” it added.

The highest number of complaints from India were about circumvention of the ban (967 cases), followed by abuse/harassment (684 cases), sensitive adult content (363 cases) and hateful conduct (313 cases).

Between November 26 and December 25, X banned 2,27,600 accounts in India.

The Weibo platform also shut down 2,032 accounts for promoting terrorism on its platform.

Meanwhile, a new report from the Technology Transparency Project (TTP) claims that X is providing premium paid services to the accounts of two leaders of U.S.-designated terrorist groups and several other organizations subject to government sanctions.

The report found more than a dozen U.S.-sanctioned entities with X accounts bearing a blue checkmark that required the purchase of a premium subscription.
