X owner Elon Musk is giving away premium features, including the once-coveted blue verification checkmark, to some of the social network’s most popular users for free.
Musk promised last week to start offering free features to people with more than 2,500 verified followers. This week, some users noticed the blue checkmark reappeared on their profiles.
Some users who got the blue checkmark this week were confused about how they got there, and the company sent some users a notification explaining the change. Typically, accounts must pay X amount of premium monthly subscriptions to earn a blue badge, which Twitter’s old management used to distinguish and verify the identity of high-profile users.
It’s a change of strategy for Musk, who criticized his old Twitter decision to hand out checkmarks to high-profile accounts. Musk called the strategy a “lords and farmers” system and soon after taking over the company removed any remaining blue checkmarks requiring people to pay.
Now, 18 months after officially taking over, he is following the old company’s lead. A spokesman declined to comment.
