EAM Jaishankar discusses Indo-Pacific and West Asia situation with Australian counterpart Huang

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with Australian Foreign Minister Wong Ying Yin on Friday and discussed regional and global issues such as the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership, the Indo-Pacific region, and the situation in West Asia.

Jaishankar will be in Perth, Australia, to attend the two-day Indian Ocean Conference starting on Friday.

Jaishankar attended the inaugural session of the conference along with Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Australian Foreign Minister Wong and Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

“It was a pleasure to meet with Australia’s FM @SenatorWong in Perth today as we gathered for the 7th Indian Ocean Conference. The two sides had a good exchange on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and reached consensus on the Indian Ocean issue. Also discussed the Indo-Pacific, The situation in West Asia and other regional and global topics.” Jaishankar posted some photos of the meeting on X.

In another post, he said, “It was a pleasure to attend the opening ceremony of the 7th Indian Ocean Conference in Perth with Chairman @RW_UNP, FM @SenatorWong and FM @VivianBala. It was a pleasure to welcome ministerial colleagues from across the Indian Ocean. ” The Indian Ocean Conference is a flagship consultative forum for countries in the region, organized annually by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in collaboration with the India Foundation.

The seventh conference will be held in Perth from February 9 to 10, co-organized by the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the S. S. S. S. S. S. School of International Studies in Singapore, and the Perth-US Asia Centre, MEA said. Jaishankar issued a statement in New Delhi on Thursday before traveling to the Australian city.

The theme of this session is “Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean”.

The meeting will bring together ministers from more than 22 countries and delegations led by senior officials from 16 countries and six multilateral organizations, the MEA said.

Since its first convening in Singapore in 2016, the Indian Ocean Conference has played an important role in bringing countries and major maritime partners in the region together on a common platform to discuss prospects for regional cooperation to promote security and growth for all in the region.
