DUP leader Sir Geoffrey Donaldson resigns facing historic crime

The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party resigns after being accused of historic crimes.

The Democratic Unionist Party confirmed Sir Geoffrey Donaldson is resigning after police revealed on Friday that a man had been charged as a suspect in the scandal.

A 57-year-old woman was reportedly arrested and charged alongside the politician for aiding and abetting other crimes. The pair are due to appear in court later this month.

In a statement on Good Friday, the party said: “The party chairman has received a letter from Sir Geoffrey Donaldson MP confirming the historic charges against him and stating that he will resign as leader of the DUP. “Effective immediately.

“In accordance with party rules, party members have suspended Mr Donaldson’s membership pending the outcome of the judicial process. This morning party officials unanimously appointed Mr Gavin Robinson as interim party leader.”

It comes after the DUP leader’s social media accounts were deleted without warning this morning.
