Donald Trump arrives in court for hush-money trial, opening depositions to begin soon

Former US President Donald Trump arrived in New York court on Monday to hear the case related to the payment of hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. He faces charges of falsifying business records to conceal payments.

This will be the first criminal trial of a former US president.

Trump, the Republican nominee who will run against Democratic President Joe Biden in November’s presidential election, has pleaded not guilty.

A Reuters news agency report said the case could be the only one of Trump’s four criminal cases to go to trial before the Nov. 5 election. The agency cited legal experts as saying that the current case is the least consequential of Trump’s impeachment.

A guilty verdict in this case would not prevent him from taking office, but it could hurt his candidacy.

What is the matter?

Last year, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office accused Donald Trump of falsifying 34 business records to cover a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels. Daniels was paid by former Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen for her silence about a sexual encounter during the 2016 campaign that she says she had with Trump a decade earlier.

Daniels said she had a sexual encounter with Donald Trump in 2006, when he was married to the last woman, Melania.
