Sydney:
Palm Bay in Australia’s northeast may have deadly animals and rough weather, but it beat rivals in Hawaii, Greece and Fiji to be named the best beach in the world.
Stretching two kilometers of pristine white sandy beach, backed by rows of palm trees, it was rated the best beach in the world by Conde Nast Traveller magazine.
Palm Cove is nestled in Australia’s “Crocodile Country,” a bustling restaurant and high-end hotel that was hit by Tropical Cyclone Jasper late last year.
But Mayor Terry James believes its natural assets, including the “magnificent Melaleuca tree” (a type of plant), mean it deserves a world-best ranking.
“Award-winning travel magazines and websites rank Palm Cove as the number one beach in the world, which is a testament to how well locals know Palm Cove,” James said.
Many other Australian beaches also made the list, including Watergates Beach near Byron Bay, Mona Vale Beach in Sydney’s northern suburbs and Noosa in Queensland.
Other top contenders include Honopu Beach on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, Aura Beach in Indonesia and Pila Dunes Beach in France.
