The dera karseva chief of Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara in Uttarakhand was shot dead by two assailants on a motorcycle inside the shrine early today, police said.
Udham Singh Nagar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manju Nath told reporters that Baba Tarsem Singh was rushed to Kati He died during treatment at a hospital in Khatima.
“We have clear (CCTV camera) video of the attackers. They were all Sikhs,” he said, adding that they fled after the incident.
Nanakmatta Sahib Gurdwara is a revered Sikh shrine located on the Rudrapur-Tanakpur route in Udham Singh Nagar district of the state. In the CCTV footage, the attacker could be seen riding a motorcycle into the gurdwara around 6:15 am and shooting at Singh with a rifle, Nath said, adding that the gunman was sitting on the back seat.
“Two shots were fired at Singh who was sitting on a chair. The first shot was fired from the front and the other from the back. Singh immediately fell to the ground,” the SSP said.
He said eight police teams had been mobilized to arrest Chief Drakaseva’s attackers.
Uttarakhand Director General of Police (DGP) Abhinav Kumar termed the incident as “serious” and said a Special Investigation Team (SIT) consisting of task force personnel and local police has been formed to investigate the incident “If there is a conspiracy behind it,” he said, “we will arrest the attackers as soon as possible.”
