A woman and her two-year-old son suffocated to death after inhaling smoke from a coal stove that engulfed the room where they were sleeping in South Delhi’s Maidan Garhi area.

After the incident, her husband and two other children were taken to Safdarjung Hospital and are currently undergoing treatment.

Police were informed of their condition at 6:16 a.m. Sunday and they were taken to hospital, officials said.

Officials said the deceased Anjali (23) and her son Shambhu died during treatment. Meanwhile, Dinesh, Divansh (6) and Devanshi (4) are currently hospitalized.

Smoke from a coal brazier, or “angithi”, is suspected to have filled the unventilated room on Saturday and Sunday nights, police said.

People usually light these stoves to stay warm during the winter.

An official said there was no suspicion of foul play and investigation proceedings had been initiated under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The family lived in a rented accommodation in Asola, police said, adding that this had been their residence for the past two years.

They said Dinesh worked as a gardener at a farmhouse in Maidan Garhi area.
