Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has written to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressing his “deep concern” over the “poor condition” of city government hospitals. Saxena’s February 3 letter also addressed media reports.
On Sunday, Kejriwal wrote to Saxena confirming receipt of the letter. In his letter, Kejriwal sought early replacement of Delhi’s health and finance ministers, saying the two bureaucrats’ “insubordination and refusal” to follow the minister’s orders “led to this state of affairs in Delhi’s health system”.
“I am writing this letter to express my deep disappointment and concern over the deplorable condition of hospitals under the health department of GNCTD (Government National Capital Territory of Delhi),” Saxena said in the letter.
“Despite constant assertions to the contrary by you and your ministers, recent media reports highlighting the scathing comments made by the Delhi High Court on the dismal state of affairs in Delhi government hospitals have drawn attention to the fact that the rot appears to be deeply entrenched, “Saxena said. Saxena added that the national capital “should have a world-class healthcare system that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens and not be plagued by systemic dysfunction and neglect as it is now”.
He also cited media reports related to court cases related to Delhi government-run hospitals. “These issues are not just administrative negligence; these are direct violations of the fundamental duties of government, indeed the fundamental right to health, casting a long-term reputational shadow on the national capital,” Saxena said in the letter.
He also sought an early “factual report” on the state of health infrastructure in Delhi’s major government hospitals. Saxena said that in line with “my constitutional obligations, as I have done in the past, when I have pointed out various issues of poor governance and abrogation of constitutional obligations, I again urge you to take immediate and decisive action to address these critical issues”.
The Lieutenant Governor further said that “your government has inherited a pretty robust health infrastructure” which has been “significantly supplemented” by health facilities run from the center of Delhi. “At the same time, you have ample funds at your disposal and you deserve to be the best medical workforce in the city. This situation leaves little room for inaction, failure and excuses,” Saxena said.
Saxena said the court opinion provides “a unique opportunity for reflection and positive change,” adding, “We cannot miss this moment.” “In light of the above, I again request a constructive and time-bound response, in which Including taking concrete steps to address the current serious situation. I would be grateful if a factual report on the state of health infrastructure in Delhi’s major government hospitals is sent to me at the earliest,” Saxena said.
