New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS) With Delhi Traffic Police’s consistent and systematic efforts to save lives, road accident deaths in the national capital have declined by 2.5 per cent by September 2025 compared to the same period last year, while fatal road accidents have also seen a steady decline of 2.9 per cent by September 2025, Delhi Police said on Tuesday.
According to Delhi Police, the number of road accident deaths declined from 1,178 to 1,149 last year till September 2025, while fatal accidents declined from 1,148 to 1,115 during the same period.
“Delhi Traffic Police has adopted a multi-pronged targeted approach ranging from analyzing road accidents, focusing on identified risk factors and recommending changes in road infrastructure to reduce road accidents and save lives,” the police said in its press note.
The sustained reduction in road accident deaths is the result of implementing globally tested, evidence-based road safety interventions.
The Crash Research Cell of Delhi Traffic Police analyzes road accident deaths, carefully studying the patterns and trends of accidents on Delhi roads.
The annual Delhi road accident report identifies high-risk locations known as blackspots. To implement the data on the roads, the traffic police engineering cell visits these identified locations to suggest upgrades related to road infrastructure.

According to the police, “The logic behind this is in line with the practice across the world of considering road accidents as preventable and not inevitable. The Delhi Traffic Police team is working with this approach to find solutions to prevent accidents.”
“This change has empowered the government to be more proactive in saving lives on the road through evidence-based and targeted interventions and programmes. The sustained reduction in road accident deaths is a direct result of targeting risk factors and recommending life-saving measures at high-risk locations. Delhi Traffic Police is committed to reducing road accident deaths,” Ajay Chaudhary, IPS, Special Commissioner of Police, Traffic Management Division Zone (II), Delhi said.
This year, Delhi Traffic Police has identified 143 locations in the National Capital Territory of Delhi and recommended changes in safe road design, installation of signage and repair of roads for safe and smooth movement of all road users.
The traffic police has recommended implementing various speed calming measures at more than 30 identified locations near schools, colleges and hospitals this year.
More than 3,600 police personnel in traffic divisions have been sensitized and given special training in speed management methods through leading road safety experts.
