Mumbai:
The death toll from an incident in which three workers fell into an underground sewer chamber in Mumbai’s Malad suburb two days ago rose to three today, officials said.
Earlier, two people died after falling 15 feet into a room in an underground sewer on Thursday night. A third person died after being admitted to a government hospital on Saturday morning, a fire brigade official said.
He said the incident took place at Malwani Gate No. 8 on Abdul Hameed Road in Ambujwadi area of Malad (West).
“The third victim, Ramlagan Chotelal Kevat, 45, who was undergoing treatment for the past two days, died on Saturday. The incident earlier claimed the lives of Suraj Kevat, 18, and Bikas Kevat (20),” he explain.
The three workers were hired to clean sewers when they fell into a room beneath a public toilet maintained by a contractor. Fire brigade officials said they were rescued by locals and taken to a nearby hospital.
An official from Malwani police station said: “Based on preliminary information, we have registered an accidental death report (ADR). So far, we have not received any formal complaint in this regard. If we find any In case of misconduct or misconduct, we will register an accidental death report.” We are conducting an independent investigation into the case.
