The Defense Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, on Thursday (October 23) overall approved various proposals from the services. Rs 79,000 crore during the meeting held in South Block, New Delhi.

For the Indian Army, Acceptance of Requirement (AoN) was provided for procurement of Nag Missile System (Tracked) Mk-II (NAMIS), Ground Based Mobile ELINT System (GBMES) and High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) with Material Handling Crane.

The procurement of NAMIS (Tracked) will enhance the Indian Army’s ability to neutralize enemy combat vehicles, bunkers and other field fortifications, while GBMES will provide round-the-clock electronic intelligence of enemy emitters. The induction of HMVs will significantly improve logistics support to forces in different geographical areas.

For the Indian Navy, AON was provided for procurement of Landing Platform Docks (LPD), 30 mm Naval Surface Gun (NSG), Advanced Light Weight Torpedo (ALWT), Electro Optical Infra-Red Search and Track System and Smart Ammunition for 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount.

The procurement of LPDs will help the Indian Navy to conduct amphibious operations along with the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. The integrated maritime capability provided by the LPD will also assist the Indian Navy in conducting peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) missions.

The ALWT, indigenously developed by the Naval Science and Technology Laboratory, DRDO, is capable of targeting conventional, nuclear and midget submarines. The procurement of 30 mm NSG will enhance the capability of the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard to conduct low intensity maritime operations and anti-piracy roles.
