CrPC 144 cited in Noida ahead of proposed farmers’ march to Parliament

Last updated: February 6, 2024 23:31 UTC

Ahead of massive protest demonstrations by farmers in Noida and Greater Noida, Gautam Buddh Nagar police on Tuesday said restrictions under Section 144 of the CrPC will come into effect from February 7 and 8.

Police also issued traffic warnings, reminding commuters not to take diversions on some routes in the twin cities as farmers travel with tractors.

Farmer groups in Noida and Greater Noida have been protesting since December 2023, demanding higher compensation and development of land acquired by local development authorities in the past. The farmer groups have called for a “kisan mahapanchayat” on Wednesday and a protest march to the capital’s parliament on Thursday to press their demands.

“Farmers have come up with plans to hold a mahapanchayat event on February 7 and march to Parliament in Delhi on February 8. In the meantime, various organizations have also come up with a number of other demonstration plans,” said additional DCP (Law and Order) Hridesh Katheriya . “In view of the above, the possibility of disturbing the peace by anti-social elements cannot be ruled out,” Kaselia said in the order announcing the restrictions.

The restrictions include a ban on illegal gatherings of more than five people and unauthorized processions, including religious and political processions, according to the order. The transport department has reminded the public about diversions on Dadri, Tirapatta, Surajpur, Sirsa, Rampur-Fatehpur and other routes in Greater Noida.

“Use alternative routes to avoid inconvenience. For traffic-related information, please call the traffic police hotline 9971009001.”
