Crew involved in Baltimore bridge collision were all Indians: report

It is unclear what caused the cargo ship to hit the bridge.

New York:

All 22 crew members of the cargo ship that hit a Baltimore bridge early Tuesday, causing it to break apart and plunge into the river, were Indians, the company said.

At around 1:30 a.m. local time, the Singapore-flagged container ship “Dali” collided with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

According to ship information provided by Synergy Marine Group, the crew is “all Indian, 22 people in total.”

The “Dali” ship has a transport capacity of 10,000 TEU and the number of containers on board is 4,679 TEU.

Grace Ocean Private Ltd owns the vessel, which sails from Baltimore to Colombo.

The owners and managers of the Singapore-flagged container ship “DALI” reported that the ship, under the guidance of two pilots, collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore at around 1:30 a.m. local time on March 26. A pillar collided. Ship management company Synergy Marine Group said in a statement.

“All crew members, including the two pilots, have been accounted for and no injuries have been reported. There was no contamination,” the statement said. While the exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined, “DALI” has now mobilized its qualified individual incident Responsive service.

The U.S. Coast Guard and local officials have been notified, and owners and managers are fully cooperating with federal and state agencies in accordance with the approved plan.

“We are shocked by what happened in Baltimore and our thoughts are with everyone affected,” Maersk said in a statement.

“We can confirm that the container ship ‘DALI’, operated by charter company Synergy Group, is time chartered by Maersk and is carrying cargo for Maersk customers. There are no Maersk crew or personnel on board,” the statement said.

“We are closely monitoring the investigation by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our best to keep customers informed,” the company said.

It was unclear what caused the cargo ship to hit a bridge in a major US city outside Washington.

It’s unclear how many people may be in the water.
